Questions,
answered plainly
The things people ask most often. Don't see yours? Ask. Questions are always free.
General
Do you work with individuals or only businesses?
Both. About half of what I do is for individuals and families at home (computers, printers, phones, Wi-Fi), and the other half is for small businesses that don't have their own IT person. Same person, same patience, either way.
What area do you serve?
Southeast Michigan for on-site visits. Locations farther out are often fine too, and travel is quoted before booking. Remote support and website work are available anywhere.
Who will actually show up?
Me, Alex Thebolt. Thebolt Technology is a one-person business, so the person you talk to is the person who does the work, every time.
When are you available?
Standard appointments are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Evenings, weekends, and same-day emergencies are available by appointment at the after-hours rate. Call (734) 234-6638, or send a message and I'll reply within one business day.
Pricing & Payment
What does "starting at" mean?
Every computer, network, and business is a little different. Starting prices assume the job goes smoothly the first time: the hardware is healthy, passwords are on hand, and nothing unexpected turns up along the way. If I find something that would change the price, I'll stop, explain what I found in plain English, and get your OK before doing any additional work. You will never be surprised by the bill.
Will I know the price before you start?
Yes. After diagnosing the problem I'll tell you what's wrong and give you a price for the fix. Nothing beyond the service call happens until you say OK.
What if you can't fix it?
Then you don't pay for a repair. The only charge is the $55 service call for an on-site visit, and I'll tell you honestly what your options are, including whether it's worth replacing instead.
Do you charge for questions or quotes?
No. Asking a question, describing a problem, or getting a written quote for a website or business project is always free.
How do I pay?
Cash, check, or credit/debit card (Square). Home services are paid when the job is done. Managed IT plans and website projects are invoiced.
Tech Support
Do you come to me, or do I bring it to you?
I come to you, at home or at your business. Many problems can also be fixed remotely over a secure screen-sharing session, which is faster and has no service call fee.
Is my personal information safe?
Yes. I only access what I need to fix the problem, I ask before opening anything personal, and I never keep copies of your files or passwords. Remote sessions end completely when we're done. Nothing stays installed unless you ask for it.
Should I repair my computer or buy a new one?
I'll give you a straight answer. If a repair costs more than the computer is worth, or it's too old to stay secure, I'll say so, and I can help you pick a replacement and move everything over.
Can you help with things besides computers?
Yes: printers, scanners, phones, tablets, Wi-Fi, smart TVs, streaming devices, and smart home gadgets. If it's something I don't work on, I'll tell you who does.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. If the same problem comes back within 30 days of a repair, I'll fix it again at no labor charge.
Business IT
What is managed IT, in plain English?
Instead of calling someone when things break and paying by the hour, you pay a flat monthly fee and I keep your computers updated, protected, backed up, and monitored, and help your staff when they need it. Most problems get caught before anyone notices them.
Is there a long-term contract?
No long-term lock-in. Plans start with a 90-day period so everything can be set up and stabilized, then continue month-to-month. You can cancel with 30 days' notice.
Which plan is right for my office?
Essentials (from $45 per device / month) suits offices that just want their computers protected and patched. Business adds unlimited remote help desk and Microsoft 365 management, and is the right fit for most small offices. Complete adds on-site support, network management, and planning. The free IT assessment will tell you which fits.
Do you handle Microsoft 365 licenses?
Yes. I can set up, manage, and bill your Microsoft 365 licenses at Microsoft's standard pricing, or manage licenses you already pay for directly.
What happens if something goes wrong after hours?
Security alerts are watched 24/7 by a security operations center, so threats are handled around the clock. For other urgent issues, after-hours support is available at the after-hours rate.
Web Design
Do I own my website?
Yes. The domain, hosting account, and the site itself are in your name. If you ever want to move on, nothing is held hostage.
How long does a website take?
A landing page usually takes 1 to 2 weeks and a multi-page site 3 to 4 weeks, counted from when I have your content (text, photos, logo). I can help write or organize the content if you don't have it ready.
What ongoing costs should I expect?
A domain name typically runs $15 to $25 per year, and hosting for a site like this is often free or a few dollars a month. The optional Website Care Plan covers updates and monitoring; without it, changes are billed hourly.
Can you fix or update my existing website?
Usually, yes. Send me the link and tell me what you want changed, and I'll let you know whether it's a quick edit or a better candidate for a rebuild.
Still have a question?
Send it over in your own words. I read every message myself and reply within one business day.
